As you have heard, the Heartbleed Vulnerability (CVE-2014-0160) “is a serious vulnerability in the popular OpenSSL cryptographic software library. This weakness allows stealing the information protected, under normal conditions, by the SSL/TLS encryption used to secure the Internet. SSL/TLS provides communication security and privacy over the Internet for applications such as web, email, instant messaging (IM) and some virtual private networks (VPNs).
The Heartbleed bug allows anyone on the Internet to read the memory of the systems protected by the vulnerable versions of the OpenSSL software. This compromises the secret keys used to identify the service providers and to encrypt the traffic, the names and passwords of the users and the actual content. This allows attackers to eavesdrop on communications, steal data directly from the services and users and to impersonate services and users.” – From Heartbleed.com
Our security specialist consultant stated this, “The OpenSSL heartbleed bug is a serious vulnerability affecting version 1.0.1 through 1.0.1f. Any device using these compiled versions of the OpenSSL library are vulnerable. Remediation steps vary depending on the device and server. In general, affected SSL certificates will need to be replaced. Web servers utilizing HTTPS will need a new SSL certificate generated with version 1.0.1g of OpenSSL. External infrastructure should be prioritized for remediation over internal infrastructure. Several proof of concept exploits currently exist and hackers actively exploiting this vulnerability. Severity of the exploit varies, but can include extraction of usernames, passwords, user session data, and even the web server’s private key.” – Brady Bloxham, Silent Break Security
